Book of Odds is an interesting new site that lets you search for odds on just about anything.  For example, not that this is earth shattering but apparently golf is safer than mountain biking.

1 in 644
The odds a golfer will be injured while playing golf in a year are 1 in 644 (US, 2006).

1 in 838.7
The odds a mountain biker will be injured while mountain biking in a year are 1 in 838.7 (US, 2006).

But you should be much more worried when you golf than when you’re out in a thunderstorm:

1 in 1,230,000
The odds a person will be injured by lightning in a year are 1 in 1,230,000 (US, 2003).

Plan B, Anne Lamott

Plan B, Anne Lamott

I’m currently reading “Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith” by Anne Lamott and ran across  something that resonated with me.  Well many of her stories resonate with me and I love reading her down to earth and insightful takes on faith and spirituality, but this one jumped off the page this morning.  Maybe it’s because my grandmother is dying, or because my mother can’t get around like she used to, or because I look in the mirror and even though I’m in my 30’s, I think this to myself at times.  Whatever the reason, we’re all in the same boat aren’t we?

It’s amost everyone’s secret- we look in the mirror, saying, “Who is that old person?” while inside there’s pretty much the same person we always were.  A lot of stuff falls off- your vision, your youth, your memory- but better stuff is left behind.

The sales rank for gay and lesbian-themed books was removed from Amazon, causing them to disappear from search results on the site.  Craig Seymour, author of the gay memoir “All I Could Bare,” wrote on his blog Sunday that his sales rank was dropped in February, then restored nearly four weeks later after he was told by Amazon that his book had been “classified as an Adult product.”

This is in contradiction to the “official statement” Amazon issued (though a 2 sentence nebulous answer hardly qualifies in my mind as a solid explanation):

“We recently discovered a glitch to our Amazon sales rank feature that is in the process of being fixed. We’re working to correct the problem as quickly as possible.”

Sorry Amazon, you’re going to have to do better than that.  You’re going to have to explain why I should believe you, why I should continue shopping from you, and why I should continue on as an Amazon Visa card member.

Do you want my continued business?  Then you owe me that much.
